Senior homes in Ottawa: a local guide

SeniorHome.ca lists 107 senior homes and retirement homes in Ottawa, from downtown retirement residences to suburban campuses in Nepean, Kanata and Orléans. The median starting price is about $3,649 a month, with independent living typically starting near $3,495 and memory care near $4,217. Here is how the market is laid out, what each care type costs, and how public long-term care placement works.

Where senior homes are in Ottawa

Of the 107 communities, 44 carry a central Ottawa address, 11 are in Nepean, 10 in Kanata, 8 in Orléans and 5 in Gloucester. The rest sit in Barrhaven, Stittsville, Richmond, Carp, Manotick, Metcalfe and Woodlawn.

  • Central Ottawa (Centretown, The Glebe, Sandy Hill, Byward Market, Westboro): mostly mid-rise retirement residences and assisted living, walkable to shops and transit, and closest to the Civic Campus and Élisabeth Bruyère.
  • Nepean and Barrhaven: the largest suburban cluster, including City View Retirement Community (from $3,956), Crystal View Lodge (from $3,495), Robertson House (from $4,260) and Solva Senior Living (from $3,123).
  • Kanata and Stittsville: newer, low-rise buildings with parking and gardens; The Bradley Retirement Living starts at $3,395.
  • Orléans, Gloucester and the east end: bilingual options are common; Heritage Orleans starts at $3,030 and Beacon Heights in Gloucester at $5,022.
  • Rural edges (Carp, Manotick, Woodlawn, Metcalfe, Richmond): small homes such as Tea and Toast on Dunrobin Road (from $4,348), quieter but farther from hospitals.

To stay near a familiar street, start from a neighbourhood page such as senior homes near Alta Vista, which borders the hospital corridor on Smyth Road.

What senior homes cost in Ottawa

These are starting monthly rates from our listings — the lowest published suite and care package, before add-ons such as extra personal care, medication administration or a second occupant.

  • Independent living — 40 communities, median start $3,495
  • Assisted living — 38 communities, median start $3,869 (same median as retirement residences and respite stays)
  • Memory care — 40 communities, median start $4,217, the most expensive common care type
  • Nursing homes — 41 listed, median start $3,370, though only 19 publish a rate because most beds are government-funded
  • Home care — 12 providers, median $3,956 for a monthly package of hours
  • Adult day programs — only 3 listed, including The Good Companions Seniors' Centre on Albert Street

Expect to pay above the median for a one-bedroom in a new building and below it for a studio in an older home. Our Ottawa cost of senior living breakdown shows the full range by care type.

Public long-term care and home care in Ottawa

Private retirement homes you can book directly; a long-term care bed you cannot. Applications go through Ontario Health atHome, which completes most of the paperwork, usually at an in-person assessment, while you complete the choice form and may select up to five homes. The same organization coordinates publicly funded home and community care and referrals to community services, so one coordinator can arrange personal support at home while an application waits.

In long-term care, the ministry funds care and residents pay a province-wide accommodation co-payment. Rates depend on whether the room is basic, semi-private or private, and the Long-Term Care Home Rate Reduction Program helps low-income residents with basic accommodation. Ottawa listings include large non-profit homes such as Perley Health on Russell Road, from $2,751 a month. Retirement homes are a separate system, licensed by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority, which keeps a public register you can check before signing. Adult day programs are often the bridge before a move: the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre program requires a referral through Ontario Health atHome and a confirmed dementia diagnosis.

Hospitals and getting around

Ottawa Public Health counts four main hospitals. The Ottawa Hospital runs emergency departments at its Civic and General campuses; the Riverside Campus has none, and the Civic holds the region's only adult trauma centre. Bruyère provides continuing and complex care at Élisabeth Bruyère in Lowertown, which helps families managing rehab or palliative needs.

OC Transpo lets riders 65 and older travel free all day every Wednesday and Sunday on buses and the O-Train with a Presto card set to the senior discount; a single senior ride is $3.28 and a monthly pass $59.75, and seniors with a registered Presto card get four free Para Transpo trips a month. Para Transpo is excluded from the free days, so ask each home whether it books door-to-door rides.

How to choose a senior home in Ottawa

  • Match the care level, not the lobby. Ask what happens when needs increase: memory care on site, or a move?
  • Check language and culture. Confirm French-speaking staff on evenings and weekends if that matters.
  • Verify the licence. Look the retirement home up on the RHRA register and ask for recent inspection results.
  • Price the real package. Get a written quote covering care level, medication help, supplies and the annual increase.
  • Plan for winter. Covered entrances, indoor walking loops and on-site medical visits matter in an Ottawa winter.
  • Apply in parallel. Start an Ontario Health atHome application even if a retirement home works now, and use a free care assessment to confirm the level.
