Senior homes in Vancouver: a local guide

SeniorHome.ca lists 43 senior homes, retirement homes and care providers in Vancouver, British Columbia, covering independent living, assisted living, nursing homes (long-term care), memory care, respite, palliative care and home care. The median estimated starting price is $3,977 a month, and estimated rates in the city run from about $2,363 a month at Salvation Army Southview Heights to roughly $6,000 for full in-home care packages. Those are private-pay prices; publicly subsidized long-term care is charged on income instead.

Where senior homes are in Vancouver

Forty-two of the 43 listings have a City of Vancouver address, so families are choosing between neighbourhoods, not suburbs. Supply is spread across all four quadrants of the city:

  • West side: older care homes and private hospitals sit close to the beaches and UBC — Point Grey Private Hospital at 2423 Cornwall Ave and Evergreen Nursing Services on Alma St are examples. Browse senior homes near Kitsilano.
  • Downtown and the West End: mostly home care and smaller residences on and around Denman and Burrard, close to seawall walking routes and hospital services. See senior homes near the West End.
  • East Vancouver: community-rooted options such as Villa Cathay Care Home at 970 Union St and the Renfrew Collingwood Seniors Society on E 22nd Ave, often with multilingual staff and programs. See senior homes near Renfrew-Collingwood.
  • South and central Vancouver: several of the city's larger care campuses, including St. Vincent's Langara at 255 W 62nd Ave, Youville Residence on Heather St and Oak Care Centre at 780 W 57th Ave. See senior homes near Marpole.

What senior homes cost in Vancouver

Starting rates differ sharply by care type. Median estimated monthly prices in our Vancouver listings:

  • $3,067 — independent living (7 communities), the lowest-cost residential option.
  • $3,787 — assisted living (8 communities).
  • $4,470 — nursing homes (18 communities, the largest category).
  • $5,193 — memory care (12 communities).
  • $5,454 — home care (6 providers), reflecting substantial weekly hours rather than occasional visits.

Respite stays (13 providers) and palliative care (10) sit in between, at median starting rates of $4,882 and $5,090. Many communities appear in more than one category, so the counts add up to more than 43. Compare figures in detail on our Vancouver cost of senior living page, and remember that starting rates usually cover a standard suite and base services — ask what a higher care level adds.

Public long-term care and home care in Vancouver

Publicly subsidized long-term care, assisted living and home health in the city are arranged through Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), not by applying to a home directly. You ask for a case manager, who assesses physical and mental health and ability to manage at home; only a case manager, hospital discharge or transition services coordinator can confirm eligibility for subsidized long-term care, which is intended for people with complex needs who require 24-hour supervision and professional care. Subsidized rates are income-based: long-term care residents pay 80% of after-tax income, to a 2025 maximum of $4,073.40 a month, while subsidized assisted living tenants pay 70% of after-tax income. Assisted living residences are registered with B.C.'s Assisted Living Registrar, and families can call 8-1-1 (HealthLink BC) for guidance. United Way BC's Better at Home program adds non-medical supports such as grocery shopping, light housekeeping and rides to appointments — often enough to delay a move when paired with private home care.

Hospitals and getting around

Vancouver's main acute hospitals are Vancouver General Hospital at 899 West 12th Ave, St. Paul's Hospital at 1081 Burrard Street downtown, and UBC Hospital on the university campus; a free shuttle runs between UBC Hospital, VGH and St. Paul's. For visiting and outings, TransLink offers concession fares to riders 65 and older with valid photo ID, and HandyDART provides door-to-door shared-ride service for people who cannot use conventional transit without assistance. Low-income seniors may qualify for the provincial BC Bus Pass Program.

How to choose a senior home in Vancouver

  • Start the health authority assessment early, even if you plan to pay privately — it establishes the care level and your place in the public system.
  • Match care to the diagnosis. If dementia is involved, confirm secure outdoor space and staff ratios at night, not just a locked floor.
  • Ask what the quoted rate excludes: care-level surcharges, incontinence supplies, escorts to appointments, hairdressing and parking.
  • Check language and food. In a city this diverse, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi or Tagalog-speaking staff and familiar meals change daily life more than decor does.
  • Visit twice — once at a mealtime, once in the late afternoon — and check travel time for the family member who will visit most.
  • Keep a short list, comparing options by neighbourhood and care type, or request a free care assessment to narrow it down.
