Senior homes in Kelowna: a local guide

SeniorHome.ca lists 45 senior homes, retirement homes and senior-care providers in Kelowna, British Columbia, from independent living apartments to nursing homes and in-home care agencies. The median starting price across priced Kelowna communities is about $3,415 a month, with independent living and assisted living starting near $3,144 and memory care closer to $4,777. Publicly subsidized long-term care and assisted living are a separate track, arranged through Interior Health after a care needs assessment.

Where senior homes are in Kelowna

Almost all listings (42 of 45) carry a plain Kelowna address rather than a neighbourhood name, so it helps to think in corridors. Three clusters stand out:

  • South Pandosy and the hospital corridor — Pandosy Street, Gordon Drive and Tutt Street addresses put residents minutes from Kelowna General Hospital, clinics and the lakefront. Senior Helpers Okanagan (3021A Pandosy St), Bayshore Home Health (3001 Tutt St) and The Fountains (2200 Gordon Dr) all sit in this area. Browse senior homes near South Pandosy and senior homes near Lower Mission.
  • Rutland and the east side — Asher Road, Hollywood Road and Montenegro Drive addresses, including GreenTree Community Inclusion Programs (1338 Montenegro Dr), Oak Tree Supportive Living (838 Hollywood Rd N) and the Seniors Outreach & Resource Centre (155 Asher Rd). Flatter, more walkable streets than the hillside areas. See senior homes near Rutland.
  • Glenmore, Dilworth and the north — AgeCare Brandt's Creek Mews (2081 Cross Rd) is the anchor here, with Sutherland Avenue and Springfield Road providers just south. Start with senior homes near Glenmore.

Hillside and newer areas such as Upper Mission, Kettle Valley, Black Mountain and Tower Ranch have more independent-living options than licensed care.

What senior homes cost in Kelowna

These are starting monthly rates from the listings, before care-level add-ons, second occupants or extra services:

  • Independent living (11 communities): median start $3,144 — rent, meals and activities, no personal care included.
  • Assisted living (7 communities): median start $3,144 — adds help with bathing, dressing and medications.
  • Memory care (7 communities): median start $4,777 — secured settings with dementia-trained staff.
  • Nursing homes (9 communities): median start $3,822 for private-pay rates; subsidized beds are priced by income instead.
  • Respite care (12 providers): median start $4,266, and home care (5 providers) at a median $5,195 a month for full packages — most agencies also bill hourly.

Kelowna also has 4 retirement residences, 6 palliative care providers and 1 adult day program listed. Rates range widely: Solstice at Tower Ranch starts at $2,481 and Nurse Next Door's care packages reach $5,288. Compare the full picture on the cost of senior living in Kelowna page.

Public long-term care and home care in Kelowna

Kelowna is in the Interior Health region, which is headquartered in the city. Subsidized long-term care, assisted living, adult day services and in-home support all start with one call to Interior Health Home and Community Care (250-469-7070 locally, or the Home Health Service Line at 1-800-707-8550). A clinician assesses needs, confirms eligibility and manages access to subsidized assisted living and long-term care homes; for long-term care, Interior Health requires that the person needs 24-hour clinician care and supervision and that community options have been exhausted.

Cost is income-tested: in British Columbia, residents of publicly subsidized long-term care pay up to 80 per cent of after-tax income, subject to a minimum and maximum monthly rate. Assisted living residences are registered with the provincial Assisted Living Registrar, and families can call 8-1-1 (HealthLink BC) for free guidance. Private-pay senior homes need no assessment — or book a free care assessment to narrow the list.

Hospitals and getting around

Kelowna General Hospital at 2268 Pandosy Street is the largest tertiary hospital in BC's Interior, with roughly 440 beds, a 24-hour emergency department and specialist services drawing referrals from across the region. End-of-life care is centred at Central Okanagan Hospice House (2035 Ethel Street), a 24-bed Interior Health hospice; admission is by referral through Home and Community Care, not by calling the house directly.

For transit, BC Transit's Kelowna system charges seniors 65+ $3 for a single ride, $6 for a DayPASS and $55 for a 30-day concession pass, and handyDART door-to-door service costs the same $3 per ride with attendants riding free. Low-income seniors may qualify for the provincial BC Bus Pass Program. Ask any residence whether it runs its own shuttle — hillside locations in Upper Mission and Kettle Valley have thinner bus service than Rutland or Pandosy.

How to choose a senior home in Kelowna

  • Decide public or private first. If a subsidized bed is the goal, book the Interior Health assessment now; private residences can be toured in parallel.
  • Check distance to KGH and to family. Winter driving up the Mission and Black Mountain hillsides is harder than flat Rutland or Glenmore routes.
  • Ask what the quoted rate excludes — care levels, incontinence supplies, second occupant, parking and medication management are common extras.
  • Confirm the care ceiling. Ask whether the residence can keep a resident through dementia progression or whether a move to a nursing home will be needed.
  • Visit twice, once at a meal. Watch staffing at dinner and ask about evening and weekend coverage and staff turnover.
  • Verify registration for any assisted living residence, and check reviews alongside your own visit rather than instead of it.
