Public long-term care and home care in Summerside
Health PEI runs both home care and the public nursing homes. The provincial long-term care page sets out the process: you contact Home Care, and a care coordinator meets with you to assess your care needs; the Summerside Home Care office number is (902) 888-8440. You are eligible for a nursing home if you are 65 or older and assessed as needing nursing-level care, and younger applicants can be considered when no reasonable alternative exists. You may ask to be on the wait list for up to three homes, and your name is ranked by the date you were approved. Health PEI states that waits can range from several weeks to several months or longer, depending on vacancies.
Costs are shared: residents pay accommodation and personal expenses while Health PEI covers health care costs, and the daily accommodation charge in public long-term care (and for subsidised residents) is $116.96. Anyone who cannot pay the standard rate can apply for an income-tested reduction through the Long-Term Care Subsidy Program. Summerside's two public homes are Summerset Manor (82 beds, six households) and Wedgewood Manor (72 beds). A further 60-bed long-term care home, to be operated privately by Enhanced Living with provincial funding, has been announced for Summerside.
Hospitals and getting around
Prince County Hospital, at 65 Roy Boates Avenue, is Summerside's acute care hospital with an emergency department. Operated by Health PEI, it has a capacity of about 102 beds and is the province's second-largest hospital after the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown. For complex needs, a physician or nurse practitioner can refer an older adult to Health PEI's Geriatric Program for a geriatric assessment; the Provincial Geriatric Program is listed locally on Heather Moyse Drive. When you tour, ask each residence how residents get to appointments at Prince County Hospital and whether scheduled transportation is included.
How to choose a senior home in Summerside
- Match the care level first. If nursing-level care is likely, start the Home Care assessment early — private retirement homes admit on their own terms, but public beds require approval.
- Visit before you list your three choices. Health PEI advises considering location for visitors, the activities offered and whether the accommodation suits your budget.
- Ask what the starting rate excludes — meals, laundry, medication administration and personal care are often add-ons in independent living.
- Check dementia capability. Only two Summerside listings offer memory care, so confirm whether a home can keep a resident as cognition changes.
- Plan for the in-between. Respite stays and home care can bridge the wait for a long-term care bed.
- Get a second opinion through a free care assessment if you are unsure which care type fits.
