Senior homes in Saskatoon: a local guide

Saskatoon has 48 senior homes and retirement homes listed on this page, from small licensed personal care homes on residential streets to larger special care homes and independent living towers. Across all care types the median starting rate is about $2,053 a month, with independent living typically the least expensive option and memory care the most. Rates run from roughly $1,300 a month in some nursing homes to about $3,030 in memory and palliative care.

Where senior homes are in Saskatoon

Forty-five of the 48 communities have Saskatoon addresses; one sits just outside the city in the Dundurn No. 314 area to the south. Options are spread across all four quadrants rather than clustered in one seniors' district:

  • Core and near-core: senior homes near City Park, Caswell Hill, Mayfair and senior homes near Nutana and Broadway put residents within walking distance of the river trails, Broadway Avenue shops and bus routes.
  • University area: Varsity View, Greystone Heights and Sutherland, close to Royal University Hospital. Luther Tower on Temperance Street is an example, with independent living from $1,826 a month.
  • North end: senior homes near Lawson Heights, Silverwood Heights, River Heights and Forest Grove — quieter streets, shopping at Lawson Heights Mall, and more care homes in converted or purpose-built bungalows.
  • South and east: senior homes near Stonebridge, Briarwood, Willowgrove, Brighton, Evergreen and Lakeview — newer suburbs where several memory care, respite and home care providers are based, including operators on Herold Court and McFaull Crescent.
  • West side: Montgomery Place, Massey Place, Riversdale, Hampton Village and Kensington, near St. Paul's Hospital.

Small care homes with a handful of residents can appear on any residential street, so check the neighbourhood closest to family rather than only looking downtown.

Public long-term care and home care in Saskatoon

Saskatoon's public system is run by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA). Long-term care placement starts with a Care Needs Assessment completed with a health-care professional — a home care case manager, hospital discharge planner, nurse or social worker — who then submits the long-term care request with your written consent. To apply for a special care home you contact the SHA, which assigns an Assessor Coordinator or Client Care Coordinator to review your needs. The SHA uses a rating system so that people with the highest need and greatest risk are placed first, and wait times are difficult to predict.

Resident charges in long-term care are income-based. Home care is provided by the SHA according to assessed need, with professional services such as nursing assessment and care coordination provided at no charge; individualized funding lets some clients buy supportive services from an agency of their choice. Private personal care homes are licensed by the province, and residents who are 65 or older, receive Old Age Security and have income below the set levels may qualify for the Personal Care Home Benefit.

Hospitals and getting around

Saskatoon has three adult hospitals: Royal University Hospital at 103 Hospital Drive, St. Paul's Hospital at 20th Street and Avenue P on the west side, and Saskatoon City Hospital in the City Park neighbourhood. Proximity matters if a parent has frequent specialist appointments.

Saskatoon Transit offers discounted senior fares from age 65, including a monthly pass around $30 and 10-ride packages at $25. Access Transit, the city's paratransit service, runs seven days a week with lift-equipped buses for people who cannot use regular routes; trips are shared rides and can be booked up to seven days ahead.

How to choose a senior home in Saskatoon

  • Match the care level first. A licensed personal care home suits moderate help with daily tasks; 24-hour nursing care means a special care home and an SHA assessment.
  • Ask what the starting rate excludes — personal care hours, medication administration, laundry, cable and supplies are common add-ons.
  • Visit twice, once at a mealtime and once in the evening, when staffing is thinner.
  • Check winter logistics: covered or heated parking, snow-cleared entrances and whether the home arranges rides to appointments.
  • Confirm dementia capability — secured outdoor space, staff training and whether residents can stay as needs increase.
  • Apply for funding early, including the Personal Care Home Benefit, since approval takes time.
