Public long-term care and home care in Newmarket

Retirement homes are private-pay and are licensed by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA), which keeps a public register you can check before signing. Long-term care works differently: all applications and admissions are arranged through Ontario Health atHome, which completes most of the application with you. You fill out the choice form and may select up to five homes. Newmarket's long-term care homes, including Eagle Terrace, appear on Ontario Health atHome's list for North York, York Region and South Simcoe County; York Region also operates its own long-term care homes. Hospitals and getting around

Southlake Health (formerly Southlake Regional Health Centre) at 596 Davis Drive is the hospital nearly every Newmarket family deals with. It is a teaching hospital of roughly 500 beds serving northern York Region and southern Simcoe County, with regional cardiac and cancer programs, so most specialist appointments stay local. Ask any residence how it handles transfers to Southlake and whether staff accompany residents.

For visits and outings, York Region Transit runs buses along the Yonge and Davis corridors plus a 65+ On-Request service for riders 65 and older. Mobility Plus is the region's shared-ride specialized service for residents who cannot use conventional transit because of a disability, and the Transit Assistance Program gives eligible low-income residents a 50% discount on adult single fares. The Town's Seniors' Meeting Place on Davis Drive is the main hub of programs for adults 55+.

How to choose a senior home in Newmarket

• Start the long-term care application in parallel. Even if a retirement home is the plan today, an open Ontario Health atHome file protects you if needs change.
• Check the RHRA register for the licence and inspection history of any retirement residence before paying a deposit.
• Visit at lunch, then again after 7 p.m. Evening staffing tells you more than a daytime tour.
• Ask what triggers a price increase — care levels, medication administration and two-person transfers are normally billed on top of the starting rate.
• Measure the drive from your own home and from Southlake. Families who visit daily often choose the Davis Drive and Eagle Street homes for that reason.
