Senior homes in Grande Prairie: a local guide

Grande Prairie has 27 senior homes and senior-living services listed on SeniorHome.ca, from lodge-style apartments to continuing care homes and home care agencies. The median starting price is about $2,949 a month, ranging from roughly $2,242 for independent living to $4,223 for private retirement residences. Publicly funded long-term care and home care are arranged separately, through a health assessment that starts with a call to Health Link at 8-1-1.

Where senior homes are in Grande Prairie

Twenty-five of the 27 listings have a Grande Prairie city address, so almost everything is within a 10-minute drive of downtown. Most of the care-heavy buildings sit in the older central grid between 94 Avenue and 121 Avenue: Mackenzie Place Continuing Care Centre on 98 Street, Pioneer Lodge on 100 Avenue, Grande Prairie Care Centre on 94 Avenue and Dieppe Manor on 121 Avenue. The west side, around 104 Avenue to 114 Street, holds the newer purpose-built campuses, including Prairie Lake Seniors Community West and The Residence at Prairie Lake, both close to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at 11205 110 Street.

Families often search by subdivision. Our neighbourhood pages cover senior homes near Mission Heights, Crystal Lake Estates and Countryside South, as well as Pinnacle, Signature Falls and Cobblestone. These are mainly single-family areas, so the homes listed on each page are the closest options to that neighbourhood rather than buildings inside it – useful if an adult child lives there and wants a parent nearby.

What senior homes cost in Grande Prairie

These are starting monthly rates from the listings – the lowest-priced suite or room. Larger suites, two people in one unit and higher care levels cost more.

Public long-term care and home care in Grande Prairie

Alberta’s publicly funded system is called continuing care, and access is based on a professional assessment by a registered nurse or physician of a person’s unmet care needs. No referral is needed: anyone can call Health Link at 8-1-1 to arrange an assessment, including for a relative who cannot call themselves. Assisted Living Alberta, the provincial agency created in 2025, determines access to continuing care home spaces.

In type A and type B continuing care homes, health care goods and services are publicly funded and residents pay only an accommodation charge for the room, meals, housekeeping and utilities. The province sets the maximum: $70.60 a day for a shared room and $81.60 for a private room as of April 1, 2026. In supportive living, the accommodation charge is set by the operator, so it varies by building. Private retirement residences are paid for entirely out of pocket, while lodges may be subsidized through local housing management bodies.

Hospitals and getting around

Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at 11205 110 Street is the Alberta Health Services hospital serving the city, with inpatient medicine units and accessible parking, elevators and washrooms. For residents who cannot use regular buses, Grande Prairie Accessible Transit (GPAT) is a registered, shared-ride door-to-door service for City residents and County residents within 5 km of city limits, including Clairmont; buses have wheelchair lifts, and wheelchair, scooter and CNIB pass users may bring an attendant at no extra cost. The City’s Transit Access Program offers a 50% subsidy on the monthly SUPERPASS for qualifying applicants. The Grande Prairie & Area Council on Aging (Seniors Outreach) on 100 Avenue helps older adults apply for benefits and seniors funding and prepares taxes – a good first stop when money questions come up.

How to choose a senior home in Grande Prairie

  • Match the care level to the next two years, not just today. With only three memory care providers locally, ask early whether a residence can keep someone who begins wandering at night.
  • Ask whether the home takes publicly funded placements or is private-pay only; that single answer changes the cost by thousands a month.
  • Get the quoted rate in writing: what it includes, what medication management, bathing help and extra meals cost, and how often rates change.
  • Plan for Peace Country winters – covered or heated parking, a sheltered entrance and reliable snow clearing matter for visiting family and for appointments.
  • Check the drive to the hospital and specialists, and register for GPAT before the move if driving is ending.
  • Visit twice, once at a mealtime, and ask residents and staff how long care aides have worked there.
  • Ask about respite and palliative options on site, so a later change in health does not force a second move.
